The 8 AKC groups - 1 :Sporting

The AKC recognizes 173 dog breeds which are in 8 groups. This post is about the first group: Sporting.

This group includes the Retrievers, including the ever-popular Labrador and Golden Retrievers as well as some that are less well known, like the Flat-coated Retriever.

The Sporting group also includes the Spaniels. Like the Retrievers, some, like the Brittany, and Cocker Spaniel, are quite well known, while Clumber Spaniels are uncommon.

Other groups in the Sporting groups are the Pointers and Setters.

Here is a full listing of the 28 dogs in the Sporting Group: AKC Sporting Group

The main thing that categorizes these dogs is the fact that they were bred to assist in hunting in woods and water. These dogs are very energetic, and are prone to being hyper when they don't get enough exercise.

The best owner for these dogs is one that lives on a farm or has a large, fenced in yard. The ideal owner should also enjoy participating in outdoor activities, such as hunting, swimming, and hiking with their dog.
