July 4th Dog Safety

It has often been said that the 4th of July is the day when the most dogs run away. This is because most dogs are TERRIFIED of fireworks.

DO NOT bring your dog with you to see fireworks. He will hate it, and will probably attempt to escape.

If you set off fireworks in your own yard, it is best to put your dog inside during the time. I was once visiting relatives that brought their dog outside to see fireworks. The dog was on a leash, but the collar was a little too lose. The dog quickly slipped out of the collar and took off down the street.

I took off after it, and soon over took it, but the situation was dangerous.

A terrified dog can run faster and jump higher then he usually would or could, and he will probably NOT come if you call him.

Just as with thunderstorms, if you are with him, don't cuddle your dog and talk in a "baby" voice if he gets scared. That will only make the dog more frightened, because he'll think you are too.
