When we were at Yellowstone, we found that there were two rules about dogs: 1. No dogs could be left alone in a car, camper, or tent. 2. No dogs aloud on trails. It would be impossible to have a good time with your dog at the park.
I heard the following narrative from my brother, who was at a different park of the park from me at the time (in his own words):
This lady came off this trail with a dog that looked think a rat terrier/ chihuahua mix, right where there was lots of geysers and hot spring things. Right then I said, "That's a nice dog. It's pretty cute. Can I pet it?" She said, "Sure, he's a nice dog."
The one problem with the dog was that it did not want to be petted. It was quite intent on getting dry. You see, the dog had been frolicking in a sort of stream that dogs were aloud to go in. And this lady, she said she knows why she shouldn't bring dogs on the trail. She said that one time she had been on one of these trails and the dog jumped off a bridge into the churning water!!!
She relived my horrified face by saying, "Luckily, it wasn't a hot spring. It was just any old water. But if that was a hot spring," Then she said, "Now I see why they put up those stinkin' 'no dogs' signs!"
The moral of this story is, don't bring your dog to Yellowstone!
