The 8 AKC groups: 3 - Working

The Working group consists of 28 large, powerful dog breeds. This group also contains some of the world's largest dogs, such as the Great Dane, the mastiffs, and the Saint Bernard.

These dogs were mainly bred to be guard dogs, livestock guardians, and just all around working dogs. Since these dogs are so strong, many Working Group dogs have been trained to pull carts and sleds - not just the Siberian Husky, which is also in this group.

Most of the Working dogs are so powerful, that they are easily more strong than the owner. It if often recommended that people do not get a Working dog, until they have had experience with other, smaller dogs.

Another thing to consider before getting a Working Group dog, is the cost. Food and veterinary care costs are higher than smaller dogs.

Also, many of the working dogs have very short life spans. A Chihuahua or Poodle could easily live to be 15-20 or even more! A Great Dane's normal lifespan is 8-10 years.

For an experienced owner, who is able to afford the costs of these animals and does not mind having a dog with such a short lifespan, a Working dog could be a good pet, especialy on a farm.
