Axolotls

A very young albino Axolotl. Albino axolotls are by far the
most common type for pets.

After seeing some Axolotls at a pet store, I decided to learn more about these unusual amphibians.

The strange name fits this amphibian. It is pronounced "Axe- O- la-tle".

The strangest thing about Axolotls is that they don't grow up! The can even breed while still tadpoles. They are almost extinct in the wild, but they are becoming moderately in captivity.

 Strange things about Axolotls
  •  An injection can make a Axolotls become an adult, but these specimens are relatively short lived.
  • Those things growing of their heads are gills!
  • In less than two months an axolotle can re-grow a gill or limb.
  • One axolotl at a zoo reportedly lived for 25 years.
Probably a younger albino.

This picture is kind of blurry but you get the idea. This is an adult wild-type axolotl.
